Ferryman’s Cottage, October 2015

We’re just back from a great 3 night week-end at Ferryman’s Cottage on the Mull of Kintyre.  We were met by a pod of dolphins which put on a spectacular display in the bay, right in front of us.  I got up early (06:00!) on Saturday morning to watch Mars meets Jupiter – and Venus.  The view was superb but my telescope etc was heavily covered in dew and the photos aren’t much good.  We had good visits to Carradale Bay and Torrisdale Castle.  There is an Antony Gormley LAND sculpture at Saddell Bay very near the Ferryman’s Cottage and opposite Saddell Castle.  The LAND series comprises  five life-size standing sculptures cast in iron and installed at five Landmark Trust sites across the UK for 12 months from May 2015, the figure at Saddell is named Grip.  More ancient effigies (1200-1300) are on display at Saddell Abbey nearby.  There is also a good little film about Saddell Castle and Bay which features the other Landmark Trust properties at Saddell, and including Ferryman’s Cottage.

On the way home we stopped at Tarbert Castle, and Ardkinglas Woodland Gardens to see its ‘Champion Trees’.  Weather throughout was brilliant and the autumn colours in the sunshine were glorious.
