Up the gumtree

Just as I was beginning to think about upgrading the telescope to an equatorial mount, which might be better for astrophotography I spotted a second-hand bargain on Gumtree, in Paisley – a SkyWatcher Explorer 200P EQ5 200mm Newtonian Reflector Telescope. So I bought it (£250). It has a good quality, very heavy, equatorial mount and an 8″ (200mm) aperture, which is much bigger and brighter than my present Celestron NexStar (130mm) go-to scope. The SkyWatcher mount is equatorial, which is good, but it is not (yet) motorised or computer controlled like the Celestron. So at present I might have to align it (with the pole star) by hand and use the finder scope to point at my selected target. Early days yet, I still haven’t used it at night! But I already know it can mount my Nikon DSLR camera better than the Celestron. That would be even better if I had a SkyWatcher Dual Speed Focuser for Explorer Newtonians . Sorry about the blatant plug – but Jane suggested I might mention it!
